Continuing Education for van der Kolk Training
The Alaska Psychological Association (AK-PA) is sponsoring CE’s for the van der Kolk September 8th and 9th workshop. AK-PA is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education programs for Psychologists.
AK-PA maintains responsibility for the program. Ten (10) continuing education credits will be available to participants who attend the entire training and complete the online workshop evaluation tool. The training begins Monday, September 8 from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, and Tuesday, September 9 from 8:30 am until 12:30 pm.
The target audience for this training includes psychologists, professional counselors, clinical social workers and advanced graduate students in psychology, counseling and social work. The training level of this workshop is appropriate for those with previous clinical experience and training in complex psychological trauma (intermediate to advanced level).
The fee for CEs is $30. Online CE payment can be made through the Alaska Psychological Association website (http://www.ak-pa.org/). Online payment is available until 5 pm on Monday, September 8. If you have registered multiple attendees for the workshop from your organization, individual payments must be made for each attendee who is seeking CE’s.
On-site payment for CEs will be accepted. All on-site payments must be made by check (made out to AK-PA).
Following the end of the training, AK-PA will send an email to all participants who have registered for CEs and signed in on the attendance logs for both days. This email will provide a link to the online evaluation tool. When this survey has been completed AK-PA will email the participants their CE Certificates.
One of the world’s leading experts in the field of traumatic stress, Bessel A. van der Kolk, M.D., is Medical Director of the Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute in Brookline, Massachusetts. He is also Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School, and a past President of the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies. He has authored over 100 scientific articles. His books include Traumatic Stress: The Effects of Overwhelming Experience on the Mind, Body and Society. Dr. van der Kolk has done extensive research on developmental and biological aspects of the human adaptation to trauma, including studying the nature of traumatic memories. He was co-principal investigator for the DSM-IV Field Trial for PTSD. He is the author of two previous books on the human response to trauma: PTSD: Psychological and Biological Sequelae (1984) and Psychological Trauma, (1987). His forthcoming book is entitled The Body Keeps Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma (2014).
Learning Objectives for the Workshop are:
- Describe recent advances in brain science, attachment research, and body awareness as they relate to the treatment of trauma.
- Describe how different regions of the human brain respond to chronic traumatic events.
- Explain how the physiological systems in the body adapt to chronic traumatic events.
- Explain how traumatized people process information and access memories.
- Explain how traumatized people regulate affect.
- Describe how adaptations made by trauma survivors impact their overall physical/psychological health and well-being.
- Describe how adaptations to chronic traumatic stress contribute to the development of psychological disorders.
- Identify techniques to address physical mastery and help people overcome feelings of helplessness and move beyond mere survival.
- Identify techniques to help clients effectively self-regulate.
Those already registered for the Van Der Kolk Training Sept 8 and 9 are invited to use the link below to pay online for CEs. Continuing Education credits are sponsored by the Alaska Psychological Association. Note, that Paypal account registration is not required to pay for CEs.
